Men help me out. Is it possible for a "player" guy to claim to value a platonic friendship and really mean it?

I have a guy friend who sleeps with tons of random women. When I one day asked him why he doesn't pursue me ually he replied"Because I view you as a friend." I felt that was a load of crap because you always hear/read that most guys almost always want to sleep with their female friend. Several months before that he out of the blue confessed that it was hard for him not to have with me. Is it possible this notorious horn dog actually does value our friendship above ? Idk?
