What does it mean that genes are expressed?

Ok I know nothing about any type of science but i have read that with identical twins who are genetically identical, one twin might get a hereditary disease because the gene is expressed or expressed more or something. how does that work. sorry if this makes no sense i am just trying to figure out what that means because i don't understand genetics at all.
