Why Did Shakespeare End His sonnets in a Couplet?

I know that it's the standard form for English/Shakespearean sonnets but why? What makes him end all sonnets in a couplet? This is the key difference in English and Italian sonnets so I would like to know why? I'm doing a poetry ysis on his Sonnet 18. I want to use this information on my paragraph describing the rhyme of this poem
